Carole Leblanc and Jo Béfort met in a lesbian bar in Toronto in 1990. Carole thought it was a one-night stand, Jo thought it was for life. They’re still together. But would they be without their wine business? They started their adventure six years ago in Collias, France. Their dream was to produce excellent wine. They had no experience, no professional support, just their passion – and their friends. Both women also have demanding day jobs: Carole is a nurse, and Jo, a vet.Nevertheless, they single-handedly restored an old wine cellar, planted and cultivated grapes, and are now producing award winning wines.Winemaking is still a very macho affair in France and it’s heartening to watch these two women quietly pushing away age-old assumptions about women and wine, simply by doing it, successfully.
